• Both Sides Now (Gr 10-12 Social Studies)   

    • Chosen by teachers, these films explore complex issues from both sides: terrorism and the West Bank separation wall; anti-Semitism and a 1983 summer camp basketball game in Alberta; friendship and betrayal in the Spanish civil war; and the effects of globalization. Four of the six films are award-winning.

  • Out of This World   

    • Presented by Q99 and the Stanford Hotel, this package of other-worldly films will take you into outer space or into an alternate past and future on earth. It features the world premiere of THE HORIZON PROJECT, the film directed by Scott Belyea as part of the festival’s Shoot for Reel internship program last summer. There will be a Q&A with Scott Belyea and Producer Dave Rice followed by an after-party.

  • A Woman's Place   

    • A woman’s place may be in a portrait hanging in Rideau Hall … if that woman is Queen Elizabeth II. Or it may be in the shops of Tehran searching for a forbidden item for a daughter who’s starting school. Or it may be on horseback retracing the trails of previous generations of Willmore Wilderness women. There will be a Q&A with filmmaker Susan Feddema-Leonard (WOMEN OF WILLMORE WILDERNESS) and artist Phil Richards (A ROYAL COMMISSION).

  • Bless the Beasts... (Gr 7-9)   

    • Chosen by teachers, these films range from the frustrations of school to the joys of pet ownership (especially when that pet poops out money). This eclectic package of ten films includes three documentaries and five comedies. Two foreign-language films with English subtitles are also included: a French-Canadian comedy and a documentary about a Loma-speaking teenage girl who goes to school in Liberia.

  • Best of the Fest   

    • Presented by Big Country, this package includes the best films of the fest as voted on by our audiences. The winning team of the first Youth Film Mentorship Project (Director Nathan Fast, Writer/Producer Imogen Pohl, Cinematographer Chillton Alstad, and Editor Mike Evans) will be introduced by Scott Belyea and their film (HB) will lead off the package. It is presented by Encana and the Stanford Hotel.

  • Watch Your Language (Gr 10-12 English/Languages)   

    • Chosen by teachers, these fascinating films make reference to literature (Shakespeare’s plays, Edgar Allan Poe’s poetry) as well as raising some very interesting questions that could spark much discussion.

  • Starstruck (Gr 4-6)   

    • Chosen by teachers, these films present many situations that kids will be familiar with: the school play, a first crush, bullies, and being different. This entertaining film package includes two documentaries and a subtitled comedy from Germany.

  • Flights of Imagination (Gr 1-3)   

    • Chosen by teachers and presented by Moose FM, this delightful package of 11 films is tied together by a focus on imagination … or the lack of it. There will be a Q&A with filmmaker Rio Fitch (THE TRAP) and his eight-year-old daughter and star Billie Fitch.

    • A dentist’s office, hospitals, a cornfield in northern Alberta … the settings for the films in this package are connected by the ability (or inability) of the characters to see what’s really there. There will be a Q&A with filmmakers Eva Colmers (GRANNY BABY) and Rory Mells (SOPHIA).

    • Presented by Rock 97 and Pizza Hut, this popular package of horror shorts starts with a pizza party at 11:15 pm followed by a package of horror shorts at midnight. There will be a Q&A with Scott Belyea who plays the villain in ADJUST TRACKING.

  • Criminal Minds   

    • Presented by KIX FM, these films include riveting dramas and a few comedies to lighten the mood. It also features HOUSE CALL, the first film produced by the Grande Prairie Youth Film Club. There will be a Q&A with Devon Burbank (HOUSE CALL).

  • Oscar Animated Shorts   

    • A package containing the five animated shorts nominated for an Oscar in 2013 (the first five that screen) along with other award-winning animated shorts including THE GRUFFALO’S CHILD which was a hit in the festival last year.

  • North Peace Encore   

    • An encore screening of the five films from the northern Peace region. There will be a Q&A with the directors of the films.
