The Calgary International Film Festival opens Thur, Sep 19 and closes Sat, Sep 29. Our own festival-produced HB, created during the Youth Film Mentorship Project with the support of Encana and the Stanford Hotel, is competing in the Youth by Youth Competition at 2:15 pm on Sunday, Sep 22 at the Cineplex Odeon Eau Claire Market Cinemas in Calgary. Congratulations to Director Nathan Fast as well as the rest of the production team of Imogen Pohl (Writer/Producer), Chillton Allstad (Cinematographer), and Mike Evans (Editor) who will be in attendance!
Rhonda Rodgers, who was a big part of the Grande Prairie theatre scene as actress and director before she moved back to Newfoundland, plays Samantha in CIFF’s Red Carpet Opening Gala presentation of The Grand Seduction directed by Don McKellar and starring Brendan Gleeson, Taylor Kitsch, and Liane Balaban as well as well-known Canadian actor Gordon Pinsent. It screens at 7:00 pm on Thur, Sep 19 at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium. Brendan Gleeson has starred in two of the short films we’ve shown at the fest including the Oscar-winning Six Shooter in 2009 which can be watched here and Noreen in 2012 which can be watched below.
The Edmonton International Film Festival opens Thur, Sep 26 and closes Sat, Oct 5. Both festival-produced films – HB and The Horizon Project directed by Scott Belyea as part of Shoot for Reel, the fest’s two-week internship program – will screen as part of Our Own Backyard 3 at 2:00 pm on Sun, Sep 29. Also in the package is Sophia which had its world premiere at our fest. Congratulations to Director Rory Mells who will be in attendance, and to the HB production team who will also be in attendance!
The fourth Peace Region film in EIFF is The Trap which had its Canadian premiere at our fest. It was directed by Rio Fitch of Rolla, BC who will be in attendance. He’s had at least one film in each of our last four festivals!

In other fest news, THE HORIZON PROJECT had its European premiere Sep 12 at MOTELx – Lisbon International Horror Film Festival and will have its American premiere at Screamfest LA Oct 8-17.
